Assessing Hertel’s Plan for “Detroit Regional Mass Transit”

First of all, the plan itself, as it was presented at the recent open houses is here.
I applaud this comprehensive effort, and it is obvious that much research and thought went into its preparation. It uses the Woodward projects as central (notably not saying which one specifically), and then builds upon that with many, many new BRT routes and, possibly additional light rail lines. It talks about consistent branding and communication, something I think is very important to this effort.
All in all, it is actually a realistic vision for Metro Detroit, and something that needs to be pursued actively, especially in the next year. Possible funding options are mentioned, but there is no endorsement of one over another, probably a good political move. Build consensus over general ideas… and then that should carry over to support of a tax or other funding mechanism that will make this a reality.
After you’ve read it, please respond with your comments here. Let’s see what we think, and maybe how the plan can be improved.
